How to apply for a marriage license in California
To apply for a California marriage license, both parties must appear in person at a County Clerk-Recorder’s office with valid photo IDs, be at least 18, unmarried (with proof if divorced recently), pay a fee, and complete an application. The license is valid for 90 days for a ceremony within California. Here are the links for Southern California County Clerks:
Riverside County County Clerk – complete the online application, appointment recommended, bring your application number (SST#). $111 for Public license, $122 for confidential license.
San Diego County Clerk – complete the online application, make appointment. Public licenses cost $70, confidential licenses are $89.
Orange County Clerk Recorder – available through both walk-in service and appointment, complete an online marriage application before visiting. Appointments recommended, schedule online. The cost for a public marriage license is $61.
What is the difference between a public and confidential marriage license?
Public licenses are public records requiring one witness, while confidential licenses are private (accessible only to the couple), require couples to live together, and need no witnesses
A California marriage license allows you to get married anywhere within the state of California. It does not have to be in the county where you purchased the license.
What are couples responsible for on their wedding day?
